Workshop “Demographic Theories” 4th (Online)

Date: July. 30 (Fri) & 31(Sat), 2021
On line meeting(Zoom URL is to be announced)

News 1 Two new courses are open now.
News 2 : The workshop on July 30, 2021 is postponed. A particular package used in Lefko3 is found to have a serious error and we have requested to fix it. If it could be done smoothly, we would reschedule the workshop on August 19 or 20. We will announce the result to you when it is fixed.
News 3 : The workshop on July 31, 2021 will start as scheduled. Additional information of Zoom URL and the contents is described below
News 4 : The last class of our workshop is scheduled on September 2 (Thu.), 2021. Please see below for the detail.

WORKSHOP

The following workshop will be held for students, researchers, and professors to provide learning opportunities on the theory and methods at the heart of demographic study. You can learn the contents, step-by-step, from elementary to advanced courses.
We now announce the two new advanced courses this year.

Schedule

New! September 2 (Thu.), 2021. 13:00–17:00
Course5:“Building and analyzing size-classified matrix projection models in R with lefko3.” (in slowly-speaking English)
by Richard Shefferson (University of Tokyo)

Abstract: lefko3 is an R package developed to automate the construction and analysis of matrix projection models (MPMs). It handles raw matrices, function-based matrices, integral projection models, and age-by-stage matrices, and it was developed to handle MPMs both with and without individual history. Analyses that it currently handles include the estimation of deterministic and stochastic projections, population growth rate, stable (and long-run) stage structure, reproductive values, sensitivity analysis, and elasticity analysis, with more analyses to come. It can also be used with other major R packages used in population ecology. In this 4hr workshop, we will cover the fundamentals of developing and using all of these MPM types. We will then work through 3-4 long-format vignettes together to see how these MPMs are constructed and analyzed in practical terms. Towards the end of the workshop, we will have time to go through the construction of MPMs being developed by workshop participants.
